As well as Casa de los Pintores, the Lobby was inspired by my visit to Cuba in 2022.
The idea came to me as I arrived in Havana late at night from the airport. The grand, open lobbies of once-opulent colonial neo-Baroque houses - long forgotten and worn by time - now serve as living spaces. Through open archways, you can see families having dinner, lounging in old armchairs while listening to the radio, watching TV, or simply sitting in the darkness. It’s a surreal sight.
Yet, there is something profoundly compelling and beautiful about how these old structures have been adapted - layered with whatever materials were available at the time, repurposed in ways that fit the daily lives of their inhabitants. In this piece I aimed to capture that essence - to show how raw beauty can be found anywhere, in anything.
