This artwork was created alongside another piece called Crime Scene. It was around the time I became completely hooked on the first season of True Detective, while also recalling the haunting mood of Christopher Nolan’s Insomnia.
I wanted this artwork to capture it all—an eerie atmosphere, a sense of creeping madness, the feeling that something isn’t quite right—all set against the backdrop of pristine, isolated nature.
Until that point, I used to create the majority of my assets myself—partly because I really enjoyed the process, but also because it gave me full visual control over everything. This time, my goal was to dive for the first time into the complexity of SideFX’s Houdini, especially its scattering workflows. As the goal shifted away from creating everything from scratch, I focused instead on building systems and understanding the new approaches Houdini offers. There were still man-made assets that had to be fully built, but most of the surrounding nature was assembled from existing, purchased assets.
